Shikishi collection honoring the tenth anniversary of the Haiku Society of America, 1978.

These 24 shikishi, or poem cards, were a gift from the Museum of Haiku Literature in Tokyo to the Haiku Society of America in honor of the Society's tenth anniversary, celebrated in 1978. Twenty-four of Japan's most renowned poets composed the haiku and calligraphed the shikishi which were presented by Kenkichi Yamamoto and Sumio Mori during a lecture at Japan House in New York City on Sept. 17, 1978. Hiroaki Sato translated the haiku, sometimes providing more than one version. These were published in "A Haiku path: the Haiku Society of America, 1968-1988" and as "Haiku selected for shikishi" by the Ikuta Press. Each calligraphic poem is on a 24 x 27 cm. board; some boards are colored and/or embellished with gold foil and each is signed with the poet's seal. Each board is wrapped in a standardized folded paper envelope and included in each envelope with the shikishi is a copy of the translation of the haiku provided by Hiroaki Sato. A photocopy of the shikishi and the translated haiku is provided outside the envelope. Each envelope arrived within a paper bag; these have been removed and a single example retained for reference. A "gift card" which was intended for display accompanied the collection. The collection includes haiku by the following: Tōshi Akao, Seiho Awano, Atsushi Azumi, Seitō Hirahata, Tatsuko Hoshino, Ayako Hosomi, Ryūta Iida, Yatsuka Ishihara, Tōta Kaneko, Shūson Katō, Sōu Minayoshi, Shūōshi Mizuhari, Sumio Mori, Kōi Nagata, Kusatao Nakamura, Teijo Nakamura, Setsuko Nozawa, Rinka Ōno, Kinʼichi Sawaki, Shugyō Takaha, Shigenobu Takayanagi, Fūsei Tomiyasu, Seishi Yamaguchi, Seison Yamaguchi.
